Suicide Safe

We know that suicide is the 10th-leading cause of death in the U.S., killing over 41,000 people every year. Alarmingly, about 45% of those who die by suicide have had a visit with their primary care provider in the month before their death. Unfortunately, not all medical professionals have the tools and resources to adequately screen patients for suicide risk and intervene when necessary.

To address this concern, SAMHSA (the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) created a free mobile app for health care providers called Suicide Safe. Based on the nationally-recognized SAFE-T (Suicide Assessment Five-Step Evaluation and Triage) Card, the Suicide Safe mobile app helps health care providers integrate suicide prevention strategies into their practice. Suicide Safe uses the five-step SAFE-T evaluation plan and provides sample case studies so providers can see the SAFE-T approach in action. Additionally, the app also includes communication tips for providers to start the conversation with patients; extra data, fact sheets, and educational opportunities so providers can stay up to date; and a resource locater that helps providers find nearby treatment options for their patients.

The Suicide Safe app is available for Android and iOS devices, and can be downloaded for free at http://store.samhsa.gov/apps/suicidesafe. This app can be incorporated easily into the suicide screening methods that health care providers are already using, making Suicide Safe an incredibly worthwhile addition to your mobile device. After all, how many apps can you say are helping you save lives?
